Open Enrollment Period for Enrollment in Non-Group Private Health Insurance Extended to April 15, 2014

Under the Affordable Care Act, the current open enrollment period allowing individuals to enroll in health insurance closes on March 31, 2014. On Thursday, the Massachusetts Health Connector announced that if a consumer has tried to apply for health insurance without help paying for costs through the Health Connector during open enrollment and was unable to complete enrollment because of technical issues with the Health Connector website or enrollment process, these consumers will now have until April 15th to select a plan that starts either May 1st or June 1st.

If a client has experienced difficulties enrolling through the Health Connector, was unable to complete the enrollment process, and enrolls between April 1st and April 15th as a result, it is imperative that you or your client forward to HDAP/CHII staff a copy of the enrollment statement/premium quote they obtain as soon as possible. This will enable us to send payment for the monthly premium and activate the coverage.

Clients who fail to enroll during this enrollment period will not have an opportunity to enroll in non-group private health insurance again until the next open enrollment period (beginning November 15, 2014) for coverage to begin January 1, 2015. Individuals may enroll in insurance outside open enrollment if they qualify for a special enrollment period due to a qualifying life event such as marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, or loss of a job.

Individuals applying for coverage and seeking help paying for their health insurance can apply at any time during the year at MAhealthconnector.org. If a person is determined eligible for ConnectorCare, MassHealth, or Health Safety Net, they will be able to enroll in that coverage at any time during the year.

If you have any questions about insurance eligibility, please contact HDAP staff.
